Garden Maintenance Services

Basic gardening service has always been the cornerstone of our business. We are proficient at a wide variety of skills and services in order to meet the broad range of needs a healthy landscape may require. Each garden and each client possess different needs and requirements.

The majority of our business is residential, ranging from large estates to postage-stamp pocket gardens, from sunny borders to woodland grottos. We may be planting Crocus bulbs one day and weilding a chain-saw the next. Strong communication and planning are key to providing the best service for the best value.

Regardless of budget, we can work with you, even if it’s to help steer you in the right direction to “do it yourself.” Or if you wish for the perfect garden, but all you want to do is golf or play bridge...well...we can work with that too.

Here are examples of most of the work we do...

soil testing and improvment
spreading and delivering mulch
weeding and deadheading
monitoring a treating for pests, pathogens and plant diseases
fertilizing and monitoring for moisture needs
pruning and trimming shrubs, hedges and smaller ornamental trees
cleaning up seasonal messes, newly acquired or long neglected and overgrown plots
dividing, propogation, and replanting of perennials
planting bedding annuals, pots, and bulbs
cleaning out gutters and putting up Christmas lights

Landscape Plans and Installations

Blooming Prairie takes a practical and efficient approach to landscaping. The only ultimate credo we never stray from is that the end results must be beautiful. By stepping back and surveying a space and how we move through it, or wish to move through it, we can begin to formulate a design. Often we propose possiblilities the homeowner never considered, but ultimately the more input from the homeowner, the closer we can come to fulfilling the dream in their mind.

While we are able to utilize a variety of styles and influences in our designs, we have found that a “naturalistic approach” provides the most benefits. This doesn’t mean your garden needs to be “informal” or unkempt. It simply means that by choosing the right plants for the right place, taking into account the climate, conditions, architectural contrast, and choosing to cooperate with, rather than control nature, we give ourselves the greatest chance of success.

We rely as much on our observations as we do on machinery. Plants are often our most valuable tools, providing such varied benefits as controlling erosion, taking lead out of the soil, and attracting wildlife. A variety of plant types in your landscape will help keep things interesting all year long. By choosing plants that attract beneficial insects we can help reduce the need for pest controls and provide valuable habitat for pollinators.

Before we grow any plants, we always “grow the dirt” first. This means that we recognize that without healthy soil, our gardens will never live up to expectations. Recognizing that the stuff under our feet is more than just mere dirt is the most important element of establishing successful gardens. By testing the soil first and making any amendments, we ensure a healthy start to all our projects. Organic compost is always added to each new garden, providing the nutrients needed to jump-start “growing the dirt.”

We specialize in making the most out of existing landscapes in need of a fresh start. When possible we try to utilize and incorporate existing plants and structures. While it is sometimes neccessary to tear everything out and start over, often some careful editing can make all the difference in the world. What we search for is the most practical approach that fits within the homeowner’s desire, budget, and physical site.

Here is a breakdown of some specific projects we handle...

designing and installing sustainable landscapes and gardens of all types
designing and installing container, courtyard and patio gardens
creating ponds, waterfalls, fountains, and other water features
constructing and designing stone benches, walls, paths, and mosaics
renovating and improving existing landscapes
